It began as a holiday.

Eager to escape a great future on the Great Plains,

Arthur Howitzer Jr. transformed a series of travelogue columns into the French Dispatch.

A factual report on the subjects of world politics, the arts, high and low,

and diverse stories of human interest.  

 

 

All great beauties withhold their deepest secrets.

 

People may or may not be mildly threatened by your anger, your hatred, your pride. 

But love the wrong way, and you will find yourself in great jeopardy.

 

'Pick-pockets, dead bodies, prisons, urinals.' You don't want to add a flower shop, or an art museum?

No, I don't.

A pretty place of some kind?

I hate flowers.

 

The presses will be dismantled and liquefied.

The editorial offices will be vacated and sold.

The staff will be paid ample bonuses and released from their contracts,

and the publication of the magazine will permanently cease. 

 

Thus, the publisher's obituary will also serve as that of this publication.

전에 보지 못한 풍미를 선사하는 딱 죽지 않을 만큼의 맹독.

꽃이나 미술관 같은 예쁜 단어 하나 없이, 있는 그대로의 살풍경만이 만들 수 있는 완전함.

단어 하나, 오탈자 하나에 매달리는 고고한 장인정신.

예술과 혁명, 사건과 사람을 두루 파고드는 집요한 천착. 

저널리즘이란 그런 것이었다고 영화는 말한다. 

 

제호는 에디터와 명운을 같이하고 잡지는 죽음과 함께 폐간된다.

시신 앞에서 한문장씩 수놓고 기워 쓰는 부고는 건조하지만 애정이 가득해서,

마치 한 세계의 문을 손수 닫는 의식과도 같았다. 

 

지금 이 순간에도 하나 둘 사라지고 있을 어떤 정신과, 제호들. 

점점 희미해지는, 그래서 종국엔 사라질지도 모를 어떤 세계를 향한 웨즈 앤더슨의 애정과 향수가 예쁘게 편집된 꽃다발같은 영화다. 

잡지의 질감과 구성, 문체와 이미지를 이토록 충실하게 영화로 살려낼 수 있다는 것에 씬이 넘어갈 때마다 감탄해야 했다. 

 

엔딩 크레딧이 올라가는 동안엔 내가 수년전 뒤돌아 도망쳐나온 세계와 그 이상이 왠지 애틋하고 서글퍼서 눈물이 났다.
